We would like to raise awareness of the parking restrictions that apply outside schools and remind motorists of the importance of parking safely and responsibly.
Inconsiderate or illegal parking can put pedestrians, schoolchildren, and other road users at risk. It can also obstruct access for emergency service vehicles when they need to respond quickly.
School pick-up and drop-off times are particularly busy periods, which can significantly increase the risk to children, parents, and other road users. Parking restrictions outside schools are in place to help keep everyone safe.
Motorists who park irresponsibly may not only create a hazard but could also receive a fixed penalty notice. We therefore encourage all drivers to follow the guidance set out in the Highway Code.
Understanding Yellow Zigzag Markings
Most school entrances and exits throughout the UK are marked with yellow zigzag lines and the words "School Keep Clear".
Similar markings can also be found outside hospitals, fire stations, police stations, and ambulance stations. These markings identify areas that should be kept clear to improve visibility and safety for pedestrians and motorists.
In some locations, accompanying signs will specify the times when restrictions apply. Where such signs are displayed, motorists may be permitted to stop or park outside the stated restricted times.
Both yellow and white zigzag markings are designed to keep sightlines clear, allowing children and other pedestrians to cross the road safely and enabling drivers to see potential hazards more easily.
Parking on Yellow Zigzags
Parking on yellow zigzag markings may be subject to different restrictions depending on the road markings and signage in place.
Yellow zigzags without accompanying signs are intended to discourage waiting or parking due to the potential danger they create for children and other road users. Enforcement action may be taken where a vehicle is causing an obstruction or creating a safety risk.
Some school entrances are also marked with single or double yellow lines, which carry separate parking restrictions.
